In the Mixx

advertisement

Mixx is a new social news bookmarking site that has recently launched its private beta. I was one of the lucky few selected to receive an invitation the join the private beta and I've been tooling around with the site for the past day. My initial impression of Mixx is a very neutral one. I've learned to grow very skeptical of social news sites over the past few years. (Plus, I'm saving all of my eager anticipation for Streamy!)

Mixx is very similar to the look and feel of Digg, but with a few slight differences. Upon signing up, you are asked to click several news categories you'd like to see articles about. These include World News, Gaming, Odd News, Comics, Health, Space, etc. After finishing sign up you are taken to a page called, "My Mixx" and there you have all the various news interests and a selection of three or four articles from each. You can then choose to have each "interest category" organized by popularity, most comments and most recent. A feature I enjoyed immensely. If you feel there are too many interest categories on your Mixx page, you can organize them in the order you'd like to see them and eliminate ones you don't want.

You are also given the opportunity to "View More" from each category on your Mixx page by clicking a link -- a feature long needed on Newsvine. If your Mixx page doesn't strike your fancy, then you can merely look up and see umbrella categories to click in order to read your news. These umbrella categories are the usual fare that you see on news sites: Popular, Business, Sports, Entertainment, etc., where each "interest category" falls within. Mixx also has a special column on the right that includes popular photos and videos related to each category, which gives it an added bonus over sites like Digg and reddit.

Mixx is a little overwhelming for news users, but the level of control and functionality one finds at Mixx is to be applauded. I plan on surfing over there at least once a day and see what's new. I'll keep you updated on my Mixx experience. (And I'll definitely write up a review of Streamy once I get an invite!)

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Wow. Thanks for finding my write-up on your website. I actually plan on writing another one, now that I've been using the service for a longer period of time.
